Elliott's Natural Building Biography

Elliott Ridgway was born in Seattle on March 14th, 1975... And grew up on the Eastside, building igloos and tree forts until leaving for college... After college, Elliott travelled and worked on various environmental campaigns and political initiatives in Alaska, Washington, Oregon, California, Virginia, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania... In 2002, Elliott partipated in the organizational development of Terra Commons, a non-profit organization based in Olympia, WA... teaching workshops on Natural Building and Appropriate Technology... In march of 2002, Elliott volunteered in the construction of the first straw-bale public library in the United States in Mattawa, Wa... In May of 2002, Elliott participated in the first Natural Building Convergence in Portland, OR working for 17 days on a cob sauna... In July of 2002, Elliott designed and built a cob oven at an organic farm in Chehalis, WA using the clay, sand, and water from the river... In January 2003, Elliott travelled to Porto Alegre, Brasil for the World Social Forum, where he designed/built an Earthen oven in Parque Harmonio to feed hundreds of volunteer organizers of the WSF Youth Camp... Total cost in materials... $1.50 for a bag of sugar... Elliott travelled to Argentina in May of 2003 and designed and built an Earthen oven for an organic farm & Bakery near Buenos Aires... In august of 2003, Elliott travelled to Costa Rica to design & build an earthen sauna, stone pool, and earthen oven in the cloud forests of Monteverde... Utilizing 17 tons of local stone, 20 tons of sand from the beach, and 12 tons of clay I dug by hand, I built a sauna heated by a double- door wood- fired oven, with two exterior benches and a pool... In July 2004, Elliott went to the NBCEast convergence for more experience in timberframing, straw bale, straw-clay, and clay plaster... In August & September 2004, Elliott worked on four straw-bale homes in northern California, including plaster, bamboo, and earthen floors... In October 2004, Elliott worked on the timber framing for the roof of the temple at Harbin Hot Springs... In March 2005, Elliott design/built an Earthen Oven in Bellevue, WA... In March 2006, Elliott design/built an earthen oven in Shoreline, WA... In March 2007, Elliott design/built an earthen oven in the Wallingford neighborhood of Seattle, WA... In 2007, Elliott remodelled a wood shed into an art studio in South Seattle, using mostly salvaged, reclaimed, and natural materials... In 2008, Elliott remodeled a sailboat with salvaged wood in Seattle... In 2008, Elliott designed/built a cedar sauna out of salvaged wood and reclaimed windows... Elliott has been building custom furniture and game boards for the last few years out of salvaged wood...
